On April 3, 2018, the Tulsa Health Department (THD) announced that “Changing Our Future Together” was the theme for this year’s National Health Week. The event, which traditionally takes place during the first week of April, aims at raising awareness regarding practical steps our community can take to form healthy habits, while addressing some of the serious public health issues our nation faces. While the event focuses on a different health topic throughout the week, residents are encouraged to take action throughout the month in areas that affect their own and their loved ones’ well being.
One of the major topics focused on is behavioral health. Eliminating unhealthy behaviors, such as not getting enough exercise and over indulging in fast food, is key to preventing a variety of diseases. Dr. Kris Parchuri of Spine & Orthopedic Specialists Tulsa, which has local offices in South Tulsa and Claremore, states, “Modifying your behavior is one of the most important things you can do to protect your health.” In treating patients, he regularly encourages them to make lifestyle changes that can end up adding years to their lives. “Exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet puts less stress your body, while getting regular medical checkups can decrease the risk associated with serious health conditions.”
Another area of focus for National Health Week is on managing chronic conditions that can result in increased health risks. According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly half of all adults suffer the ill effects of one or more chronic health issues, such as arthritis and chronic pain due to orthopedic injuries. Attending regular checkups, following your doctor’s instructions, taking the appropriate medications, and reporting new symptoms promptly are all ways you can help minimize the negative effects these conditions have on your overall quality of life.
While some patients are hesitant in visiting the doctor out of fear that a surgical procedure may be required, today’s orthopedic physicians have a variety of treatment options when it comes to relieving chronic injuries and pain. “When treating patients, we explore all non-surgical options first,” says Dr. Kris Parchuri. “Even if surgery is required, many of the procedures currently available are less invasive, allowing for quicker recovery times.”
One of the main goals of National Health Week is encouraging individual behaviors that make for a stronger community. Developing healthy habits and attending to chronic health conditions are both key to making this goal a reality.
