Raymark Plumbing and Sewer Encourages Public to Adopt a Storm Drain

Seattle, WA — As the cold and wet weather continues in Seattle, more storm drains will become clogged with leaves and all manner of debris. This is why six Puget Sound cities (Duvall, Maple Valley, Newcastle, Redmond, Sammamish, Seattle, and Tacoma) joined together to launch the Adopt-a-Drain program earlier this year.

To adopt a drain, individuals can visit adopt-a-drain.org, choose an available drain in their neighborhood, and then spend at least 15 minutes twice a month clearing debris from on top of and around the storm drain grate. It is not recommended to remove the grate itself, and the program asks that individuals contact city (or county) staff if the drain is actually clogged.

Seattle’s Adopt-A-Drain manager, Susan Harper, has this to say to the community: "By caring for your local storm drain, you can help prevent localized flooding and reduce debris in our drainage system and waterways. This helps you, your neighbors, your utility, and our local waters."

For the first year of the program, the participating Puget Sound cities have a goal of 1,000 adopters. Since its launch, nearly 500 adopters have signed up, which translates to over 850 drains having been adopted and close to 3,000 pounds of debris collected so far.
